New Officials Hub

Start strong as a wrestling official.

This page is designed to help new SMWOA officials understand the first steps, required resources, gear expectations, mechanics, evaluations, and early-season preparation.

First-Year Roadmap

Your first season, step by step.

New officials improve quickly when they focus on the process one step at a time. This roadmap shows a simple progression from preseason registration through end-of-season growth and development.

1

Preseason

Registration

Complete your MSHSL registration, confirm your eligibility, and make sure your officiating account information is ready before the season begins.

2

Preseason

Attend the Meeting

Participate in the SMWOA preseason meeting to receive updates, meet leadership, understand expectations, and prepare for the season.

3

Early Season

Connect with a Mentor

Learn from experienced officials, ask questions, review mechanics, and build confidence before and after your first few matches.

4

Early Season

Work Your First Match

Arrive early, wear the proper uniform, communicate clearly, and focus on professionalism, positioning, signals, and match control.

5

Midseason

Receive Feedback

Use mentor observations and the new official evaluation process to identify strengths, improve mechanics, and continue growing during the season.

6

Postseason

Postseason Improvement

Reflect on the season, review what went well, focus on improvement areas, and prepare to return next year more confident and more consistent.

First Match

What to remember before your first assignment.

A strong first impression matters. You represent yourself, SMWOA, the schools, and the sport of wrestling when you step onto the mat.

Arrive early

Give yourself time to find the site, check in, get dressed, meet your partner, and prepare mentally.

Look professional

Wear the proper uniform and make sure your required equipment is ready before the match begins.

Communicate clearly

Talk with your partner, coaches when appropriate, the scorer’s table, and wrestlers using calm and professional communication.

Keep improving

Ask questions after the match, accept feedback, review mechanics, and focus on one or two improvements each time out.

Mentorship

Use feedback to get better.

New officials are not expected to be perfect. Mentors and evaluators help identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement.

The evaluation form is a development tool. It helps new officials better understand positioning, signals, rules knowledge, safety, communication, consistency, and professionalism.

Helpful Reminder

Common new official mistakes.

  • Waiting too long to complete registration.
  • Showing up without all required gear.
  • Not reviewing mechanics before the first match.
  • Using unclear or hesitant signals.
  • Not communicating with the partner or table.
  • Trying to learn everything at once instead of improving one step at a time.

Preseason Meeting

What to bring to your first SMWOA meeting.

The preseason meeting is one of the best ways to get connected before your first season. Come prepared, ask questions, and use the meeting to understand how the season works.

  • Your MSHSL registration status or questions.
  • ArbiterSports login information, if available.
  • A notebook or device for taking notes.
  • Questions about gear, assignments, rules, or expectations.
  • A willingness to learn from experienced officials.
